Peter Higgs launches attack against Nobel rival Stephen Hawking

A row between two of the world’s most famous scientists yesterday threatened to overshadow the celebrations as the world’s greatest scientific experiment got under way.

Professor Peter Higgs, the scientist who gave his name to the Higgs boson, the particle at the centre of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment, launched a withering attack on Professor Stephen Hawking, saying his work was “not good enough”.

Professor Higgs dismissed the views on the £2.6 billion project of the man generally considered to be the greatest physicist of his time, and said that no other particle physicist would view his approach as “correct”.

The scientists behind the £4.4bn atom smasher had already received threatening emails and been besieged by telephone calls from worried members of the public concerned by speculation that the machine could trigger a black hole to swallow the earth, or earthquakes and tsunamis, despite endless reassurances to the contrary from the likes of Prof Stephen Hawking.

Hacker knacken Webseite vom Teilchenbeschleuniger

Gefahr für das weltgrößte Experiment? Medienberichten zufolge haben sich Computerhacker Zugriff zu einer Webseite des Teilchenbeschleunigers LHC verschafft. Weil das angeblich so einfach war, verspotteten die Angreifer die LHC-Techniker in einer Botschaft sogar als "Schüler".

The Grid

The LHC will generate huge amounts of data, with nearly 150 million sensors picking up information from millions of particle collisions every second at the centre of each of the four main detectors.

This will produce around half a gigabyte of data every second, or around 15 petabytes (15 million GB) every year, equivalent to filling a standard 100GB hard drive every four minutes.

To cope, a specialist LHC Computing Grid (LCG) has been built.

Überhitzter Magnet zwingt Forscher zum Abschalten

Nachdem der weltgrößte Teilchenbeschleuniger in Genf im September seinen Dienst versagte, können jetzt endlich die Reparaturarbeiten beginnen: Der minus 271,3 Grad kalte Tunnel der Maschine musste erst wochenlang aufgewärmt werden. Die von Skeptikern befürchtete Apokalypse wird also frühestens Ende April stattfinden.
