This episode of "Need to Know" was recorded after the downing of the Chinese surveillance balloon off of South Carolina, and within two hours of posting, the Alaska shoot-down took place, followed quickly by the Yukon shooting. While we are working on an episode that will specifically address these fast-breaking stories, we do believe this episode — #28 "Chinese Balloons" — has plenty of important and original material in it. What are these mystery objects that US fighter jets keep shooting down?

For the past week or so, it has seemed that North America is under some sort of aerial assault. Multiple flying objects that have been tagged, for the most part, as unidentified have been shot down by U.S. fighter jets. (Another destroyed object was identified, by the U.S. military, as a Chinese surveillance balloon.) Recovery crews are working to find and study the resulting debris, to better understand where these intruders came from and what they were doing in our skies.

NEW DETAILS ON UNIDENTIFIED OBJECTS SHOT DOWN OVER THE U.S. AND CANADA: HERE’S EVERYTHING WE KNOW

Multiple incidents involving unidentified objects shot down in U.S. and Canadian airspace, the possible detection of an object over Montana, and the additional downing of an object over Lake Huron on Sunday, are now believed to have involved balloons carrying small payloads, according to statements from officials early on Sunday.  The incidents follow the downing of a large high-altitude Chinese balloon over the U.S. East Coast last weekend. The Pentagon has not confirmed whether the objects shot down over Alaska and Canada in recent days are also suspected to be of Chinese origin.

How the U.S. Government Made Pilots Too Embarrassed to Admit They’d Seen UFOs

Over the Super Bowl weekend, the U.S. shot down at least three UFOs, or as they’re now called, UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena). The first was spotted over Alaska and the second over Canada, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed on the action. A third was downed over Lake Huron.

A CNN segment about one of the objects features a common refrain: that “not even the pilots could identify what they saw,” largely because the UFO had no visible means of staying airborne.

But the good news is that pilots felt comfortable saying something—which has not always been the case.

‘Difficult’ search ahead for object shot down over Yukon. Defence minister explains why

As the search continues for an unidentified object shot down over Yukon by a U.S. fighter jet this past weekend, Canada’s defence minister says it will be “difficult” to find.

Anita Anand told reporters in Brussels, Belgium, Tuesday morning that terrain and weather in the northern territory are posing significant challenges to search and recovery efforts there, while similar operations are underway near Alaska and Lake Huron for objects shot down there over recent days.

Senators left a classified briefing Tuesday with at least one question answered about the three unidentified flying objects that the military shot down over the weekend: They weren’t aliens.

That’s about where the certainty ends.

Members of both parties entered the briefing room with Biden administration officials wanting more information about the origin of the unidentified objects. They left the room reiterating calls for more transparency from the White House.

“This is what I took away: This has been going on for years,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.). “Number two, except for the China spy balloon, we don’t really know what they are. Number three, we don’t even know if we’ve caught all of them. Number four, what’s different right now is that we’ve shot some down. That’s the good news, I suppose.”

U.S. Scrambles To Get A Handle On Mysterious Aerial Incursions (Updated)

A new U.S. government team is being established at President Joe Biden's direction to help examine the policy implications stemming from increased scrutiny of aerial activity over and around North America. In the past two weeks, U.S. fighter jets have shot down a total of four high-flying aerial objects in American and Canadian airspace, including one identified as a Chinese government surveillance balloon. The U.S. Air Force's top officer said today that the full extent of what is now being observed and what threats they might pose is still being analyzed.

John Kirby, the top spokesperson for President Biden's National Security Council (NSC), announced the new inter-agency team earlier today. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will be in charge of the new working group, the formal name of which does not yet appear to have been disclosed.
