They are now the proud owners of a fighter jet.

They purchased a Dornier Alpha Jet like the one pictured. They are storing it in a hangar at Moffett Field in Mountain View.

Our news helicopter flew over the hangar and found a closed door, but the control tower confirmed the jet was inside.

The New York Times says the plane is outfitted with scientific instruments to help out with NASA missions.

Google Founders’ Fighter Jet Will Fly NASA Missions

A NASA official said Friday that the top Googlers’ new fighter jet will be used mostly to fly missions for the agency that four other jets owned by Google’s top executives could not handle.

“They are dedicating the plane primarily for NASA payloads,” said Steve Zornetzer, associate director of the NASA Ames Research Center, which operates Moffett Field near the Google campus. He said that the Google executives’ pilots would use the Dornier Alpha Jet for “training and pilot proficiency.”

NASA: Google Gulfstreams not science experiments

Update from Spacemen Google's top execs have purchased a fighter jet and parked it at NASA's Moffett airfield because - contrary to their original agreement with NASA - the execs' fleet of passenger jets is unsuited to running the space agency's earth science experiments. At least, that's the word from NASA.

As we reported early today, H211 - the private holding company that owns and operates planes on behalf of Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and chief exec Eric Schmidt - has purchased a 1982 Dornier Alpha Jet, and the 26-year-old fighter was recently spotted at Moffett Field, where Google's Willy Wonkas park their four luxury passenger jets: a Boeing 757, a Boeing 767, and two Gulfstream V.
